Quick updates related to UND Football, both on the field and off.
- Junior fullback Dustin Iverson was kicked off the team on Monday by Coach Bubba Schweigert. This was not his first transgression during his time with the football program as he was suspended for the first two games this season for a university related reason. It goes without saying but there are only so many chances a player gets before he loses the privilege of playing college football. Not only that but he now loses his scholarship, which is a very big thing to receive these days (skyrocketing tuition costs). We all make immature choices in life, some of us (raising our hands) more than others. But in this day and age, with the internet and social media, the chances of these poor decisions coming out are much greater. Kids just need to be smarter about all decisions now. We wish Iverson the best moving forward.
- On Tuesday it was announced that senior CB Chris Brown quit the team. Not coincidentally, Brown was demoted to #2 in favor of true freshman Tyus Carter. Brown had improved immensely since the arrival of Bubba Schweigert and his defensive staff. Last year he played fairly well, enough to be the starter coming into this season. However, Brown had not played all that well this season and that included the NDSU game last weekend. The coaches made the decision to start the younger Carter to try and give the defense a lift that it needs with Big Sky play starting on Saturday vs. Davis.
- Cornerback is the weak link on the defense right now and we fully expected some kind of a change. The part we are having a hard time with is how a senior can up and quit on his team after being demoted to #2 for a game in week 4. Senior Dayo Idowu was demoted to #2 on Monday, also. Did he quit? The answer is no he didn’t, because he is smart enough to realize he is still going to play 20-30 snaps a game and if starter Brian Labat would get injured, he will be playing 40+. Makes us wonder how bought into the program Brown really was if he can make this knee-jerk of a decision. Severely disappointing and we hope he doesn’t have regrets on this later in life. We wish him the best as well.
- The word around camp is UND is looking at making some changes along the offensive line to try and kickstart the running game. Junior Mat Cox and true freshman Elijah Grady are both getting looks at center and right guard, respectively. It’s also time for freshman Demon Taylor to step up now and get some consistency in his game to help out the UND offense. It all starts up front and the entire line as a unit has not played at a high level for about 8 straight quarters now.
