The Fighting Hawks have officially finalized their coaching staff.

Thunder Lake Lodge

Head Coach Bubba Schweigert announced yesterday that former UND standout linebacker Brett Holinka will be joining the staff as the new defensive line coach.

Holinka played at UND from 2005-2008, when UND made the transition from D2 to FCS.  Holinka was a Great West all-conference selection his senior year and two-year starter for the Sioux.

Coaching experience:

St. Thomas – 2010-2011

Rutgers – 2012-2014 (D-QC)

Winona State – 2015-2017 (ST & LB)

University of Mary – 2018 (DC)

Holinka is initially slated to be recruiting in Illinois where UND is possibly looking to make a bigger dent in upcoming years.  They signed Luke Skokna, Isaac Moore, Elijah Beach, and Jayson Coley this winter from the Prairie State.

Interesting tidbit in that Holinka played at UND the same time as OC Danny Freund did (2005-208) & secondary coach Joel Schwenzfeier (2006-2008).  He was also coached by current UND DC Eric Schmidt for two seasons (2006-2007).

“I want to first thank Coach Schweigert and the rest of the staff for this opportunity,” said Holinka. “I’m very grateful to be hired here and I can’t wait to get to work for such a great program. I am excited to be back in Grand Forks and at the University of North Dakota to continue on the great football tradition here.”
