It seems strange that a final recruiting weekend, just a few days before signing day, is going on without much fanfare.  The reason for that is the new recruiting calendar. It employs an early and late signing period and has changed things, to say the least.

Back in the days this would’ve been a frantic week of driving around the upper midwest visiting current commits and hoping nobody tries to come in and steal them. Then, race back to Grand Forks and get ready for an important final weekend of trying to cap off the class and gain momentum for spring ball.  Not any longer and it’s actually much, much better for the coaches and their families.

This weekend the UND staff is expecting to host around 4-6 visitors total.  We have confirmed the following names as attending:

  • Richard Agyekum – CB -Cologne Crocodiles (Netherlands)
  • Ethan Ball – S/WR – Riffel Royals – Regina, SK
  • Marcus Preston (current signee) – WR – Free State High School (KS)
  • Jack Wright (current signee) – WR – Regent Prep High School (OK)

Agyekum is an extremely interesting prospect.  He is a smaller corner at 5’9″ but is very quick and shows some of the best hips we’ve ever seen on tape.  His footwork and natural reaction skills are impressive.  Agyekum was committed to the Gophers at one time but that fell through so he is back on the market.  UND has had several players from the Netherlands over the past couple years (Bakker, Vrede, Van Ommeren) and obviously want to keep the pipeline flowing.

Ball just popped up on our radar this week and is another solid looking prospect.  At 6’1″-190, he could easily play wide receiver or safety for UND.  He is a tough, physical type of player. Ball committed to the University of Calgary last month but that is not binding to the NCAA so even if he signed there he would still be free to come to an NCAA institution.

National Signing Day (late period) is next Wednesday, Feb 5th.  UND will be hosting their annual Signing Day Party at the Alerus Center.  The event begins at 5:30pm.
