After going south on I-29 for their last two commitments, the Hawks headed east to the Land of Lincoln for add their latest addition to the Class of 2021.
On Monday, Tanner Koziol of Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park, IL became the second tight end to join this class – with Jaden Norby being the other. La Grange Park is a suburb 15 miles straight west of downtown Chicago.
The Nazareth Academy Roadrunners went 13-1 last season, losing in the 7A state championship game to Mt. Carmel.

Koziol is the new hybrid style of tight end that OC Danny Freund is recruiting for his offense. At 6’5″-210, he is an obvious downfield mismatch but will have the frame to put on weight and play some tight end along with wide receiver. UND showed how it would look last season when they used Travis Toivonen in that hybrid position. Koziol reminds us a lot of incoming freshman Elijah Klein of Mandan. His speed is decent and he moves fluidly for a big man. Body control and route running will be paramount as he evolves in the program – much like how Noah Wanzek and Toivonen kept improving in those aspects year by year.
The catch radius on film is too obvious to miss. But we also noticed that Koziol catches numerous back-shoulder fade routes – a route that I personally love to see bigger WR’s run. UND began to run many more of them last season under Freund and we should continue to see them this season with 6’5″ Garett Maag getting more balls his way.
Koziol is the 7th commitment in this class. Note: Koziol is a former teammate of current UND defensive lineman Isaac Moore.
