In what wasn’t a huge surprise, the MVFC reshuffled their conference schedule yesterday in response to Indiana State opting out of the spring season. This new schedule isn’t a drastic change for UND as they didn’t play the Sycamores this year.
The Hawks still open the season with three straight home games but now play the Salukis of Southern Illinois in the opener instead of Missouri State. That game is set for February 20th.
The NDSU game will be played on March 20th now in Fargo.

UND officially started practice today. The ramp-up phase of workouts & meetings is over and it’s time to get down to business.
We had tweeted recently about how vital this spring season will be for developing depth as the Hawks can play their freshman and not have it count against their clock. The game will slow down quite a bit for a freshman come August if he can get his feet wet in eight games this spring.
I will be interested to see how seriously coaches take winning these games. Now, I don’t mean they won’t want to win but will they be playing all their freshman at times this spring? If so it means a typical veteran starter is not in there. Which means that freshman will be opposite a senior possibly and good things may not happen.
But, the experience they gather will pay off next fall. As I read reports from around the country on other FCS programs, I think we will be seeing a whole lot of youth out there this spring.
Regarding playoffs – with a few more FCS teams opting out this week we would be surprised if there are playoffs this spring. I honestly see no upside to it and it would be better to end the season in April, let the players rest and get ready for summer workouts in late May/early June.
