The inaugural Missouri Valley Football Conference season is getting closer, Hawk fans.

UND Football officially released their 2020 MVFC schedule yesterday via a schnazzy little video on their Twitter page yesterday.

(Note: UND will announce the 2021 schedule this afternoon)

The Hawks open the conference slate at Youngstown State.  The Bo Pelini-led Penguins are usually loaded with talent and will be a tough test right out of the gate.

Interesting that UND doesn’t play Northern Iowa in 2020.  I assumed that UND would always play Northern Iowa based on regionality but that isn’t the case.  UND also doesn’t play Indiana State (beginning in 2020 there are 11 teams in the conference).

Many people are understandably predicting that UND will struggle early on in there transition to MVFC life.  “The Valley” as their media loves to call it is a very tough conference with strong teams that have strong offensive and defensive lines.  Will there be an adjustment period for the Hawks? Of course.  Will they struggle? More than likely.

For all the revisionist historians out there let’s take a look back at how the first two seasons of MVFC play went for our fellow Dakota schools:

NDSU

2008 — 4-4

2009 — 2-6

SDSU

2008 — 6-2

2009 — 7-1

USD

2012 — 0-8

2013 –3-5

As you can see, SDSU was surprisingly the only team that fared well in their first two seasons of MVFC play.  NDSU struggled both seasons and USD was absolutely atrocious.

One thing we can guarantee you is that UND needs to improve their offensive line play before they join the MVFC.  Running the football will be a necessity and top-end talent and depth needs to continue to be developed before 2020 arrives.
