With the recently named hire of Marc Trestman as head coach for the Chicago Bears, the speculation can begin about former UND All-American linebacker and D-coordinator Tim Tibesar being added to the staff in some role on defense.

In 2011, Tibesar was Trestman’s D-coordinator in Montreal and was the linebackers coach for 2009 and 2010 during their Grey Cup title runs.  Prior to that, he served as the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator at Kansas State under Ron Prince.

Tibesar’s most recent role was at Purdue as D-coordinator for 1 year (2012) and was relieved of his duties when Head Coach Danny Hope was fired.

It would seem that Trestman could call on Tibesar to coach linebackers or at minimum, give him a quality control job on the defensive side of the ball.  While Trestman may have many, many options for hires given his various tours in college, NFL and CFL – Tibesar seems like a logical option for a position on his staff.  It’s still early and remains to be seen how many, if any at all, of the current Bears defensive staff will be retained.

Tibesar, a St. Paul native and St. Agnes High School alum, played at UND from 1992-1996  and also coached at UND from 2001 – 2004 before leaving for Kansas State.  He coached linebackers on the UND 2001 National Championship team.
