Every spring, some attrition occurs on the roster because of grades, playing time, injuries, being homesick, etc. Luckily for the Fighting Sioux Football Team, that attrition is minimal this year. Here is a list of notable departures and injuries going into next fall:
Departures
Marcus Binns, Freshman RB, St. Paul, MN – there has been a lot of talk and speculation regarding Marcus’ future at UND. Word is that he has had some ongoing injury issues and has decided that football probably is not the best thing for him moving forward. All indications are that Marcus is a great kid and that he made a very mature and educated decision for himself. He will be transferring after the semester to go to another school. A couple possible destinations would be to go home to the University of Minnesota, or to go to school with his brother, Broderick Binns, at the University of Iowa. Marcus comes from the powerhouse Cretin-Derham Hall program that has also recently produced FB Marcus Tibesar, OL Joe Kleason and OL Shea Walker.
Others: Matt Field, Freshman OL, Brookings, SD, Nick Doehling, Freshman OL, Nashotah, WI
Injuries
Ethan Magstadt, Soph. FB – As reported earlier this spring, Magstadt blew out his achilles, a very painful injury that takes a long time to rehab and recover from. The staff was looking to Magstadt to be the leader at the fullback position for 2010. This injury hurts, considering he is probably out for all of 2010. Look for Catlin Solum and Seth Wisthoff to fill the void at fullback when the Sioux offense goes with a traditional power 2-back set.
Dominique Hawkins, Jr. CB – Sat out the spring game because of a hand/finger injury. Nothing too serious and was an easy decision for the staff considering his game experience. It also gave the younger corners a chance to get some quality playing time. Chavon Mackey and Chris Hall both took advantage of their opportunities and showed promise during the spring.
Kenny Watkins, Jr. CB – Was having a great spring before injury. Was also suspended for the Spring Game due to an off the field issue.
Delano Saporu, Jr. CB – Sat out due to lingering upper body injury suffered during the season.
Ty Boyle, Sr. DL – Played the 2nd half of last season with a meniscus knee injury, which is saying a lot at the DL spot. Unfortunately, he tore his other meniscus in the spring game and will have surgery to repair it. The good news is that he should be back and ready for fall camp in August.
Ryan Dressler, Sr. WR – left the spring game on crutches. Turns out he had a major case of turf toe. Should be back and healthy for fall camp.
Josh Murray, Jr. RB – No defection or injury news here. However, he still has some work to do in the summertime to be academically eligible for this fall. He has done all the right things to put himself back into position to be allowed back on the team. Have to give the kid credit for that, very easily could have mailed it in. He was the most productive player on the field in the spring game and would be very fun to watch in a 2-back set with Mitch Sutton this year. That may be a realistic option if the aforementioned fullback position doesnt pan out the way the coaches want it to.
