Thursday, Sept.1  SEASON OPENER vs. Drake (7 p.m.) *Alerus Center*

As was indicated by the preseason roster, all but two of the class of 2011 are on campus and a part of the UND program.   LB Aarin Smith and DE Wesley Kavanaugh did not make it to camp.

One thing to pay attention to if you are attending practice is the style of offense that is being run.  We have heard it could be more of a traditional pro-style look that was run when Coach Mussman was the O-coordinator.  The Pistol will still be a part of it, but not exclusively.  Defensive scheme should be unchanged for the 22nd straight season.  The 3-4 works and the numbers will get better as the depth at each position do.

The marketing/media department over at Fightingsioux.com is doing a great job again with their football coverage.  They already have an opening day story up and we assume there will be much more if last year was any indication.  Second to none coverage by them.

Opening night opponent, Drake, is picked 3rd in the preseason Pioneer League prognostications by Phil Steele.  They have 17 starters back from a team that went 7-4 in 2010.  That game will be nationally televised on Fox College Sports – same channels as previous years – and locally on the Fighting Sioux Sports Network.

Four freshman have been invited to participate as preferred walk-ons at the start of fall camp. They are hometown boy OL Luke Hoplin, LB Ryan Nelson from Eagan, Minn.,
DL Aaron Hartung from Hudson, Wis., and defensive back Dillon Olson from Grygla, Minn.  With the roster limit being raised to 95 it allowed the Sioux to bring in a few extra local players to give them a chance at playing college football at the D1 level.
