After a mini-vacation & some R&R it’s time to catch up on what’s been going down around Memorial Stadium.

Thunder Lake Lodge

UND recently announced the hiring of defensive line coach Austin Flyger.  Flyger, a 2005 graduate of Augustana, is a former NCC defensive lineman of the year (2003) meaning he brings experience at the position, which is always a bonus.  The way a former player sees the little things cannot be duplicated easily.

Flyger’s coaching experience includes a one-year stint at UND as a GA (2007) and a combined eight seasons at Southern Illinois under Dale Lennon and Nick Hill (2008-09 & 2012-17).  Flyger coached the defensive line both times.  His MVFC experience will be a big plus as UND joins the conference this season. Flyger will also be able to quickly get up and running with his extensive experience coaching in the 3-4 under Bubba Schweigert/Lennon at SIU.

Last season, Flyger was the defensive coordinator at Northern State under former UND defensive line coach Tom Dosch.

It was also announced last week that running backs coach Malcolm Agnew has left UND to take a position at Sacramento State.  Agnew spent three years on the UND staff, coaching all-time greats Brady Oliveira and John Santiago.  Agnew was Kansas/Missouri area recruiter so that area will need to be backfilled this spring.

UND already opened the position last Monday so it will probably close around February 24th.  Timing is an issue because spring ball is coming up really fast – the first practice is set for February 28th.

An interesting name that could be a candidate to replace Agnew is former UND standout wide receiver Greg Hardin.  He is currently the wide receiver coach at Robert Morris, a fellow FCS program.  Hardin has been there for two seasons and coached at Millersville under former UND OC Greg Breitbach the two seasons prior to that.
