Had a chance to catch up with Grand Forks Red River High School football coach and UND football alum Vyrn Muir and he gave us some insight on recent OL verbal commit Jace Hellman and his prospects at the next level at UND:

Rumors

Jace has gone to UND’s football camps the last couple of years and the coaches have liked what they have seen from him there. He has a lot of potential to become a consistent player for the Sioux with some quality time spent in the weightroom.  He will need to develop his upper body strength and continue to work on his explosive power and quickness.  He made good progress in our strength program last summer and will need to continue to demonstrate the dedication and discipline needed to be a contributor at the FCS level.  Jace is somewhere between 6’3 & 6’4 and did weigh 255 at the beginning of our football season. He is currently in basketball so I would guess his body weight is closer to the 240-245 range.  Jace has good feet and is an excellent pass blocker.  His good footwork also allows him to lock onto guys in run blocking and get a good push from the line of scrimmage.  He also played some d-line for us and did a nice job of stunting down into inside gaps and stalemating opposing offensive tackles. We are excited to watch him grow and develop at UND over the next 4-5 years.”

All of this makes us lean to projecting Jace as a center or guard at UND.
