The UND Football program has received a commitment from DB Ryan Cain of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cain, 6′-0″-180lbs, played multiple positions for the Warriors and was very dangerous on kick returns, as evidenced in this highlight tape. The Warriors finished the season 8-4. Cain had 3 INT’s in his senior season but missed the first 4 games of the season with a broken collarbone injury. Head Coach Tony Lombardi’s Warriors finished the season 8-4 on the season and lost to Cedar Falls in the Class 4A quarterfinals.
We see Cain playing safety in college due to the Sioux having a need at that position in coming years. He played both corner and safety in high school and that will help his coverage skills at the collegiate level. While he doesn’t seem to be an overly physical player on film, he shows good coverage techniques which is a credit to his coaches at George Washington High School. He also shows good instincts and “feel” which is requisite for the defensive back spot and is a pretty solid tackler. Cain hails from the same conference as current UND player Jer Garman.
It should be noted that per Rivals.com, Cain chose UND over offers from MVFC members South Dakota and Northern Iowa. Cedar Falls (UNI) is only 60 miles away from Cedar Rapids, so UND literally got one from the Panther’s back yard this time. This has proven to be a very difficult task to accomplish for UND in the past.
Cain is the 14th known verbal commitment to the 2012 recruiting class and the 1st prep commitment from the state of Iowa.
Good to hear the confirm on Cain. Do you guys know anything about the Steven Rivera that is one of your twitter followers? He appears to be coming on a visit this weekend.
We noticed that as well. We know nothing about him other than he is following us. Appears to be a WR type but they already have three commitments there. There is however, a rumor about another WR having committed to UND but we do not know who it is. This would be really strange if true because that would make four.
There is another TE that committed earlier this week.

According to Izzo UND is recruiting Justin Arp, who may project as a TE.

Glad that this was confirmed. As for another WR commit, I am starting to get curious about which ones may be looked at more as Safety or CB prospects. Fletcher (preseason anyway) was rated Top 10 DB’s in the state. With 3 WR prospects last year (although I thought I heard Jameer Jackson may have the body to become a TE), I would think 4 would be a little too many this year. But, I’m not on the coaching staff so they would know the needs a lot better than I.
Ryan Cain looks like a terrific ball player. What a wonderful addition. Our schedule is great and the Big Skn provides opportunities to go to great locations and see other parts of the country. I think new recruits are going to enjoy what lies ahead for UND football. Exciting times for football in the Big Sky for sure.
From what I’ve heard Coach Belmore does not want Jackson to be a TE. He’s about the size of Andre Johnson, maybe they should just try and get him faster. Just imagine the matchup problem for a DB against a 230+ lb WR who can run. And he could be a devastating blocker on the outside.
